New for 2020, St. Croix has reimagined the Mojo Bass Glass series—and what you’ll find is the addition of IPC mandrel technology and designs to meet the needs of anglers that know and understand the value of a premium moderate action glass rod… and at a Mojo Bass price point. And, if you happen to be at the 2019 Bassmaster Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee, swing by the St. Croix Rod booth and check out the promotion we’re running with Z-Man which entitles purchasers of rods to not only great deals but free chatterbaits!
The Mojo Bass Glass series includes five moderate action rods—four new casting models and one new spinning rod—covering a wide range of technique-specific applications. What anglers will find are specially-designed models suited to target cranking, chatterbaits and rattlebaits, multi-purpose crankbait fishing, as well as a model designed specifically for plus-sized crankbaits.
The casting rod line-up starts with the MGC610MM TARGET CRANKER, a 6’10” medium power rod. Next is the MGC72MM CRANKER, a 7’2” medium power rod. Fans of chatterbaits and rattlebaits should rejoice over the MGC72HM RIP-N-CHATTER, a 7’2” heavy power stick incredibly adept at shaking a rattlebait or slicing a chatterbait through the salad. And, for those big crankbaits, meet the MGC74MHM BIG CRANKER, a 7’4” medium-heavy power rod. Lastly, on the spinning rod and crankbait front, St. Croix is happy to offer the MGS72MM CRANKER, a 7’2” medium power rod. All models retail in the real-world range of $140-$160.
“The rod designs all start with IPC mandrel technology and super premium, 100% linear S-Glass. In terms of aesthetics, they’ll be painted Mojo Green Metallic. The cork shape on the casting model does not have a foregrip; it has a casting ring like Mojo Bass, and the guide platform is the same as Mojo Bass with Kigan Master Hand 3D black guides. We changed the design on the reel seat to make it more ergonomic and provide improved angler comfort. The EVA butt caps are also preferred by a lot of anglers, so that was a nice crossover with the Mojo Bass series, too,” says Gavin Falk, Project Engineer, St. Croix Rod.
“But comparatively speaking, to the old Mojo Bass Glass, when you pick them up they’re better balanced than the previous designs. Mojo Bass Glass blanks have been engineered to perform as efficiently as possible. The castability is effortless. They’re extremely easy to use,” says Jason Brunner, Director of Engineering and Manufacturing, St. Croix Rod.

Legend Glass Spinning
The perfect partner for windy days, or to deliver small and midsize baits to fish in multiple depth ranges.
“Legend Glass spinning (LGS72MM) is going to be a game changer for folks that throw light crankbaits on light line, especially the thin profile baits that like to tumble when cast on rods that are too stiff,” says St. Croix’s Dan Johnston. “The blank bends down enough to protect very light fluorocarbon line with a light crankbait, which is something anglers have been looking for a while.”
“That linear S-Glass on the IPC mandrel made Legend Glass arguably the best fiberglass bass rod ever put on the market,” Johnston adds. “The fact that we just put it on a spinning rod is really exciting. It’s cool to be able to finally throw thin-profile lightweight cranks on light line.” Retail price is $260
All-New Legend Tournament Pitchin' Rod

Retail Price is $300
All new Legend Tournament Bass rods have been refined to include a new guide train, improved reel seats and split-grip cork handles. The series has also been expanded to 33 models, including new 8’ plus models leading the way in long-rod performance. Mojo Bass Power Shake
The brain child of shaky head savant Jesse Wiggins. The seed for the Mojo Bass Power Shake (MJS73MHF) was planted when Bassmaster Elite Pro Jesse Wiggins met St. Croix's Director of Engineering Jason Brunner at ICAST 2017. “Whenever you’re building a rod to pro specs, one of the difficulties can be getting the angler and engineers speaking the same language,” says Brunner. “But Jesse was articulate and specific about what he wanted—in the most simple terms, a spinning rod with a combination of medium-power butt section and medium-heavy tip section in the 7’ 3” length." What followed was a spinning rod that's superb for super long casts, deep water fishing, and picking up slack. The Mojo Bass Power Shake was honed and hammered on the ledges of the Tennessee River, and comes with SCIII graphite and IPC® mandrel technology for stunning performance at an unbelievable value at $140 retail.
Mojo Bass Dock Sniper
An affordable rod with the accuracy and backbone to battle in close quarters. The 7’, heavy-power, fast action rod shoots for precision, as accuracy is requisite to hitting sweet spots around docks. The Mojo Bass Dock Sniper’s (MJC70HF) fast-action tip allows gentle, precise placement of baits, while its heavy backbone gives you the lifting power to hoist bass away from underwater brush piles, cables and ladders that threaten to snag your catch—all for $130.
]]>Long before they push into the shallows to feast and spawn, early spring panfish linger along nearshore breaklines and associate with nearby cover, including deep weedlines and submerged wood. These fish can be targeted effectively with artificial baits, particularly compact soft plastics rigged on light jigs.
]]>St. Croix Panfish Series rods, like the new 6’4”, light-power, fast action PFS64LF, are excellent choices for these cold water presentations. Spool up with thin diameter, 4-6 lb. test fluorocarbon or a comparable, smooth-casting braided line, and tie on a 1/16 or 1/32 oz. jig. The best jigs for this application have a thin wire “keeper” to ensure that the soft plastic bait remains pinned tight to the head of the jig. Tip the jig with a 1 to 1.5 inch soft plastic. High action baits like curly tail grubs work well when the water is warming, but cold front conditions call for finesse baits with more subtle action. Black, white, and red color patterns are highly effective in the spring.
Long casts and slow retrieves are the norm when targeting early season panfish. Resist the temptation to impact significant action to the bait with the rod tip; rather, focus on swimming the bait just above, or even in contact with, the weed or wood cover. The sensitivity of the St. Croix Panfish Series Rods effectively telegraphs even the lightest of bites, which could come during the steady retrieve or during a pause, as the bait flutters down into the cover.
This spring, leave the minnows and worms at the dock. Instead, rustle up a mess of early season panfish with light jigs, soft plastics, and St. Croix Panfish Series rods!
]]>Trout arent bluegills. Trout arent crappies. Trout arent bass. Trout are a creature onto themselves, living, and thriving, in trifling mountain streams and tiny, slow-flowing brush-infested creeks; inhospitable homes to most gamefish species.
The principal difference between trout from other species is seen in the peculiar places in small streams they live. From the bank, their haunts look like no legitimate fish could even wriggle in the thick of the deadfalls and overgrowth. But its right within the thick of those entanglements they dwell. And its the minute openings some only inches wide where if a bait is perfectly placed, one can pull a fish of remarkable size.
Overall, casts are more accurate with short rods, which makes ones with a tip closer to the hand textbook for the techniques needed to get a bait right where it needs to be. But ultralight line is required to keep trout offerings flowing flawlessly. And while a buggy-whip rod might work, hooksets and the ability to heave a trout from such thick cover is compromised tenfold.
And its this need for a perfectly-placed cast and ability to pull a trout from such gnarly structure why we have added a new model to the trout-specific, Trout Series with a 4-foot 10-inch fast-action, ultra-light power spinning rod (TSS410ULF).
The handle configuration; the guide platform; the combining of two different graphite technologies Theres nothing out there specifically designed for targeting trout in tight corners like this new model in St. Croixs Trout Series, says Dan Johnston, National Accounts Manager for St. Croix Rods and trout-fishing connoisseur. To put it simply: Theyre the most well-thought-out trout-specific spinning rods on the market.
Designed to provide superior performance for trout aficionados, the new one-piece has the optimal weight, sensitivity and balance, founded on a premium-quality blank fashioned with a blend of SCII graphite and high-modulus, high-strain SCVI graphite, which also gives the rod added power in the butt section to handle the biggest fish in the drink.
Next is the Sea Guide stainless steel guides which are 20- to 30-percent lighter and held securely with two coats of Flex Coat slow-cure finish offering superior sensitivity and stand-off from the blank to keep line from sticking to the rod during those rainy days trout bite best in. Guide XMS split style reel seat with custom insert, surrounded by a premium-grade cork handle, also improves sensitivity and is comfort in the hand.
Backed by a 5-year warranty and St. Croixs Superstar Service, the new 4-foot 10-inch Trout Series rod is one phenomenal small-stream trout tool designed for catching fish in the tightest conditions anglers can face, and all for $100.
]]>The new Panfish Series model is perfect for pitching Thumper heads and jig spinners, and it provides the length to give the lure action without ripping a crappies lips out when you set the hook. Its not too long, and its fast. That makes it perfect for vertical jigging as well. Theres just so many uses for this rod its very versatileIts a dream rod, says Midwest fishing pro, Brian Brosdahl.
For Brosdahl, versatility is paramount to the panfish game. With so many patterns for plucking pans out of the water from ice to open water he needs a rod that can truly do it all. I don't want a rod thats too long I want a rod that is just right, one you can pitch, but thats light and manageable enough when you reel it in that the rod isnt sagging. This rod is perfect for that. It really makes those lures work underwater.
The new 6 4 lite-power fast action(PFS64LF) addition to St. Croixs storied Panfish Series comes packed with all the hallmarks anglers have come to expect. Like all models in the line, the 6 4 Panfish Series rod is built with a blend of premium-quality SCII graphite combined with high-modulus/high-strain SCVI graphite for optimal weight, sensitivity and balance. Sea Guide guides yield weight savings compared to ceramic guides while bolstering sensitivity. Sea Guide reel seat features custom insert coupled with premium-grade cork handle, providing comfort and sensitivity.
The Gold Dust Metallic cosmetic package is sealed with two coats of Flex-Coat and slow cured to a shimmering finish, making the 6 4 Panfish Series an elegant beauty perfectly tuned for 1/16-1/4-ounce lures.
Ill pair it with 6-pound fluorocarbon, Brosdahl notes. With panfish, there are micro adjustments for every type of fishing environment and condition. And this rod is capable of handling almost anything you throw at it.
]]>The hunt for mega muskellunge has a way of beating up an anglers body. That goes double for power fishermen; those who habitually heave larger, heavier baits with long, powerful rods. Larger baits mimic prey species like ciscoes, suckers, even baby burbot, thumping their fins and tails, vibrating mightily as they move through the water.
During the fall, musky anglers pitching large baits like pounder Bull Dawgs impart a rip-and-reel action. This involves a series of rapid rod jerks while reeling to take up slack line over and over and over again. To pull off the retrieve, anglers routinely jut the rod between their ribcage and the inside of their armpit. Problem is, most conventional musky rods tend to hang between ribs, creating a bruised, raw spot along the ribcage.
Consumer demand for a newer, better rubber rod was intense, says Rich Belanger, Promotions Manager for St. Croix Rod, who also notes St. Croix was the first to design a Bull Dawg-specific rod over a decade ago. Anglers asked us for the ultimate big bait rod that could be fished comfortably, all day long, without beating them up."
We ultimately developed a customized, oversized EVA butt handle made to pad and protect anglers bodies during rigorous retrieves, hooksets and battles, noted Belanger. The diameter of the butt handle is much wider than on traditional musky rods, but with no noticeable increase in weight. It distributes pressure more evenly across the side of your body; doesnt get caught between two ribs so it spreads out the load a little more. The grips got some give to it, so you can rip all day long and not get that raw spot along the ribcage so common with traditional and split-grip handles, explained Belanger.
Anglers will appreciate the combo cork/EVA construction of this full-length 20-inch handle.
The beauty of the rod extends well beyond its custom, cushioned butt section. Of special interest, the new Premier Series Rubber Rod features an advanced PSS20 Fuji palming reel seat. This specialized reel seat positions all four fingers in front of the trigger, re-distributing pressure areas and greatly alleviating stress in the wrist area.
The 9-foot rods extra-heavy power, fast action blank, says Belanger, offers another keen casting advantage. We built the blank to optimize casting efficiency with these big baits. In essence, the rod does the work for the angler. As you swing the rod backward, the weight of the lure flexes and partially loads the blank, creating energy. On the forward swing, the rod unloads and propels the bait a great distance. So its the rod itself that does the heavy lifting, once again saving wear and tear on the angler. Over the course of a day of casting a Bull Dawg, this makes all the difference in the world.
Recently, musky anglers at the Chicago Musky Expo were able to see and demo the new 9 extra-heavy power, fast action Premier Musky (PM90XHF), aka the "Rubber Rod". The rod brought home two awards for the Park Falls, WI rod company, winning both the Best Rod in the New Rod Category and Best New Product in Show at the always-popular musky showcase.
Priced at $220 and available at retailers in late February, the new Premier Rubber Rod will easily throw baits up to 16-oz with relative ease.
